MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) (5014) has given AirAsia Bhd the assurance that the new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang will be ready by March 2012. On its part, the budget carrier will work around the new deadline, despite it being seven months later than what it initially wanted. "With the assurance given by MAHB, we are now re-evaluating air routes we (AirAsia) have dropped, with plans to reinstate them," its chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes told reporters yesterday. He is looking at destinations such as Hadyai, Palembang, Pontianak and Balikpapan. AirAsia officials had called a press conference yesterday, announcing that it has reached an agreement with MAHB on several issues regarding the current LCCT and the new permanent LCCT. Industry observers view AirAsia's move as a sign to bury the hatchet and move forward with MAHB, with which the airline has been feuding with for more than two years. The airline chief went out of his way to extend the olive branch to MAHB, going as far as to say that AirAsia appreciated the efforts of MAHB and its senior management, particularly those of its group managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad, in helping resolve the outstanding issues between the two companies. "The agreement reduces the uncertainty that placed our expansion plans in limbo. We are now confident that with these issues resolved, we can confidently go ahead with the proposals to expand our routes and help further boost the nation's coffers," Fernandes said. Bashir declined to comment when contacted. The agreement with MAHB includes improved signage and additional car parking lots for the existing LCCT. It also includes parking bays for 76 aircraft and space for AirAsia to set up its headquarters next to the new terminal once it is ready. MAHB first fell out of favour with AirAsia, when plans for AirAsia to have its own airport in Labu got botched. |
